MEET ALEXANDRA SUAREZ

Sexologist & Certified Sex Counsellor

sex.

Such an intimate experience. So open, yet so secretive, shrouded in misinformation, guilt and shame. Such an immense source of healing and creativity. And yet, such an unforgiving source of pain that can scar us for life. Physically, psychologically and emotionally, it permeates every aspect of our lives and social fabric, connecting us and creating distance at the same time.

For three years I was able to work in this field, first as a sex educator and then as a community health worker. To this day, I still carry with me the stories from all the patients I saw. Telling someone that their HIV test had come back positive, doing options counselling with a young woman uncertain of what her future might hold now that she was pregnant, watching a patient break down in tears, another one smile and sigh in relief. Their stories inspired me and broke my heart all at the same time, and cemented my love and dedication for this type of work.

When we talk about sex, we are not just talking about ‘sex.’ We are simultaneously and covertly talking about other things: our upbringing and family dynamics, attachment styles, gender, consent, power, culture, health, religion, shame, a desire to belong and to feel loved. I’ve been fascinated by this realisation and it has guided my work into a better understanding of the complexities of human relationships.

I’m here to help you open up the conversation on love and sex so that you may lean into your most authentic self and create relationships from a place of trust, openness and mutual understanding.
